John Scudder Biography

                    John Scudder Biography : Today l want to write about the first American missionary and western medical missionary John Scudder.        

    Gospel pamphlets, which are powerful tools in proclaiming Christ, have led many to salvation around the world.

                    John Scudder was born on 03-09-1793 in New Jersey, USA, the son of Joseph and Mariya Scudder.


God's call as Medical Missionary

                    One day  John Scudder while visiting a patient, came across a gospel pamphlet entitled "Changing the world". When he took it and read it, he got the feeling that something great had changed in his heart. He felt that he was being called to serve God through the medical profession.

John Scudder's Medical service in Srilanka and India.

             His obedience to God's call led to a great revival in India. John began his journey as the first medical missionary to go to Srilanka, then came to India. and did his services there for over 36 years. His efforts resulted in revolutionary changes in the Indian medical field.

              John went to Srilanka in 1819, he served there for nineteen years in the dual capacity of clergyman and physician. His most important service was established a large hospital, of which he was a physician in chief. He was specialized in the treatment of Cholera and Yellow fever. He established several native schools.

             In 1836 John Scudder and Winslow started a mission at Madras with intention of establishing a printing press to issue the scriptures and pamphlets in the Tamil language. He was the first American medical missionary in India.

             A total of 43 people from the family of John Scudder, who dedicated all of his children to missionary service, dedicated themselves to the service of God.

             Idus Scudder, who founded the first teaching hospital in Asia "Christian Medical College" in Vellore, Tamilnadu, was the granddaughter of John Scudder. The organization was serving society over a hundred years and has been continued to this day.

John's Evangelism:

           John was one of the most indefatigable distributors of gospel tracts that ever came to India.

          John dedicated to serve the people with his life of devotional offerings to Christ, he worked to uplift the lives of the depressed people in Indian society. He helped them not only to be healed in their physical bodies but also to be spiritual development of the people.

           He published " Letters from the East", "Appeal to Youth in Behalf of the Heathen"; "Letters to Pious Young Men"," Provision for Passing over Jordan" and many tracts and papers that were published in the "Missionary Herald". He also gave away Almanacs. The tracts were merely an accompaniment to his preaching.

           John, who has written many pamphlets on his own, has never been tired or bored of distributing them. He has successfully fulfilled the responsibilities entrusted to him in this world as a faithful servant of Christ.
